STORYLINE:
Algerian gold medalist boxer Imane Khelif arrived home in Algiers Monday saying it was "a moment of joy."
"It is certain that the result was honest and the medal is well deserved."
She was responding to ongoing controversy about her gender following what the International Olympic Committee called "impossibly flawed" testing done on Khelif by the Russian-dominated International Boxing Association.
"I dedicate this medal to all the Algerian people who supported me, all Algerians. I am very proud of my success. I thank God, and it is our right to be happy and celebrate this title," Khelif said upon leaving the airport.
Her coach Mohamed Chaoua said that her victory is more than just a gold medal.
“We have proven ourselves on the field, and all the press around the world and all Algerians are talking about Imane now. They all defended Imane, who has become an icon," he added.
Khelif’s hometown of Tiaret erupted in celebrations after she won the gold medal on Friday.
Further celebrations are expected in Algeria in the days to come.
