STORYLINE:
French President Emmanuel Macron on Monday hailed the 2024 Paris Olympic Games as an "extraordinary success" as he thanked the public and private actors who worked during the event.

Police officers, gendarmes, soldiers, magistrates, representatives of private security, public transport, hospital workers, firefighters and volunteers were invited to the gardens of the Elysee Palace.

“You made these Games a moment of joy, of effort, of surpassing oneself, an extraordinary success which completely conquered the country, and I believe the whole world," Macron told the crowd.

The 2024 Olympics came to an end Sunday with an elaborate closing ceremony at the Stade de France, just north of Paris.

But the job is not over yet, as the Paris Paralympic Games begin on Aug. 28 and run until Sept. 8.

Many sports will take place in venues near iconic landmarks such as the Eiffel Tower, Versailles, and the Grand Palais.

The Paralympics will bring together 4,400 athletes from 180 countries in 549 events and 22 sports.
