Sudanese Armed Forces refuse to attend US-mediated cease-fire talks | DW News

After more than a year of devastating fighting in Sudan, cease-fire talks, arranged by the US and Saudi Arabia, have begun today. The Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF), representing the Sudanese government, are a key party to the talks, yet are not participating. The SAF is struggling to halt the advance of the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), who stand accused of indiscriminately killing men, women and children in ethnically motivated attacks. Some of the worst violence has been documented in Darfur, and in particular, El Geneina, the capital of West Darfur. A deadly RSF attack there killed at least 15,000 people last autumn and forced survivors to flee to neighboring Chad. Some 600,000 Sudanese are now living in refugee camps in Chad. DW’s Mariel Mueller traveled there to capture their stories.
