STORYLINE:
Ecuador’s President Daniel Noboa, who took power nine months ago, confirmed on Friday that he will seek reelection for the presidential elections in February 2025.
Speaking to supporters at the convention of the National Democratic Action (ADN) political movement, Noboa said he wants to continue with his political project, which he said seeks to achieve justice in a country besieged by violence.
Supporters raised their hands, confirming their votes for candidates for Ecuador’s Presidency and Assembly.
The ADN convention continued on Friday, with the presentation of the names of those who will accompany Noboa as candidates.
He also announced that official Maria Jose Pinto will be his vice-presidential running mate.
His mother, former Assemblywoman Annabella Azin, will lead the list of candidates for the National Assembly.
The 36 year-old businessman and politician was elected in an extraordinary election to complete the term of his predecessor, Guillermo Lasso (2021-2023), who dissolved the Assembly and called for early elections, shortening his own mandate.
During his nearly nine months in office, President Noboa has taken actions considered by analysts as a ‘heavy handed’ approach against criminal organizations operating in the country.
One such action involved the declaration of an internal armed conflict.
As a result the police and military are now in charge of prisons, which are considered command centers for criminal actions.
