"Delayed –certainly. You know, I mean, stranded. Sounds like you’re in a lifeboat in the middle of the Pacific, you know, with, you know, two ounces of water and no food. They’ve got water, food, air. Station is a very well-supplied place these days. They’re kind of stuck because their ride isn’t, fully, approved for return."

"Whatever happens with the Starliner, they need to find out what the problem was and fix it and give everybody confidence that they are still in the aerospace business in a, in a major way."

"The astronauts and I’ve known many of them are highly selected people. They are very mentally resilient. They’re physically incredibly fit. And so I’ve got no, concerns that this delay will, put them in any kind of a mental state. They, you know, they they know what’s going on."
STORYLINE:
NASA is wrestling over how and when to bring two astronauts back from the International Space Station, given the dicey condition of their Boeing ride.

Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams have been up there since early June, two months longer than planned. Their stay could now stretch into next year, if NASA decides the thrusters on Boeing’s Starliner cannot be trusted to safely bring its test pilots home.
Plan B is SpaceX.

A decision is expected next week or so on which way to go.

The astronauts have been “kind of stuck,” as Scott Hubbard, former director of NASA Ames Research Center puts it, since early June.

"The astronauts and I’ve known many of them are highly selected people. They are very mentally resilient," said Hubbard. "They’re physically incredibly fit. And so I’ve got no, concerns that this delay will, put them in any kind of a mental state."

This is Boeing’s first time launching astronauts, after flying a pair of empty Starliners that suffered software and other issues. Even before Wilmore and Williams blasted off June 5, their capsule sprang a leak in propulsion-related plumbing. Boeing and NASA judged the small helium leak to be stable and isolated, and proceeded with the test flight. But as Starliner approached the space station the next day, four more leaks erupted. Five thrusters also failed.
