"Give me back my daughter. It is not fair that a Venezuelan mother has to go through this. She’s been detained and nobody will tell me anything, nobody says anything. If I don’t start looking for her I won’t get her back. No one has told me anything, no one has given me a reason. You can’t do that to a person."

STORYLINE:
The family of university professor Edni Lopez, who was detained on Sunday at the airport, delivered a document to the ombudsman’s office and demanded her release.

Lopez’s mother, Ninoska Barrios, sobbed as she told the media that her daughter did nothing wrong and said she still doesn’t know why she was detained.

"It is not fair that a Venezuelan mother has to go through this. She’s been detained and nobody will tell me anything, nobody says anything," Barrios said.

Lopez’s detention came amid a fierce government crackdown on demonstrators, activists and politicians who have links to opposition activities or protests.

Venezuela-based human rights organization Foro Penal says 1,102 people have been arrested since July 29 when protests erupted across the country after Maduro was proclaimed president of Venezuela amid accusations of electoral fraud.
