STORYLINE:
Tunisia’s annual honey festival in the town of Sidi Alouane celebrated the work of beekeepers from various countries.
The 34th festival brought together more than 20 exhibitors from Tunisia, Algeria, Libya and Morocco, making it a regional platform for sharing expertise on beekeeping.
The festival offered visitors a diverse array of honey flavors including honey harvested from the Sarj Mountains in Kairouan, known for its variety of wildflowers.
Also on display, was honey produced in the orange groves of Cap Bon in the northeastern tip of Tunisia
Hichem Maatoug, a beekeeper from Sidi Alouane, saw the event as an opportunity to market his organic products despite the challenges he faces.
"There is neither medicine nor nutritious food for the bees. Bees need feeding at certain times, or they will die. The state has not provided us with sugar syrup," he said.
He highlighted the vital role of bees in pollinating fruit trees, greatly benefiting farmers who host the beekeepers in their fields.
Local officials attended the opening of the festival, which began on August 2 and will continue for 12 days.
Officials and visitors sampled various types of honey after the opening ceremony.
The event "is an important opportunity for the marketing, introduction and preservation of the Maghreb heritage in Tunisia," said Fathi Al-Buhairi, the president of the Arab Beekeepers Union.
