"The message that I want to deliver through my 11th exhibition, ‘Mr. Steel,’ is quite a purposeful message to the people and society. First, I want to bring the concept of contemporary art to the people. Secondly, I want to use my sculptures that you see today to talk about different messages like peace, the country, history, culture, heritage and science fiction."

10. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Elias Abdel Hameed, visitor:
"I experienced variety in this exhibition, wooden sculptures, stone sculptures as well sculptures that were formed by assembling and welding metal. The shapes represent different ideas. For instance, this sculpture reflects freedom and the others represent aliens. Wael likes to watch alien movies, that’s why he subconsciously thinks about them and creates these shapes."

STORYLINE:
Sculptures tackling a wide range of themes including extraterrestrials went on display at an open air exhibition in the Yemeni city of Aden.
The artwork is part of a show titled, "Mr. Steel," the 11th exhibition by award-winning Yemeni artist Wael Yassin Goman.
The exhibition features stone, wood and metal sculptures and tackles themes such as peace and history.
The ensemble of sculptures also show Goman’s depiction of aliens since the artist is also quite the science fiction movie buff.
"I want to bring the concept of contemporary art to the people," Goman said.
I want to use my sculptures that you see today to talk about different message," he added.
He uses his art to send messages about social issues including poverty, unemployment and child marriage.
His work also tackles resilience in the face of hardship, drawing from the harsh conditions he has experienced in his life.
"I believe that this is the first exhibition in Aden that focuses on sculpting," said Abdulah al-Ameen, an artist and art professor at Aden University,
He added that the artwork can be viewed as an experiment through which the viewer can learn about the artist’s experiences.
