2. SOUNDBITE (English) Arno Freudenberger, German tourist:
"It’s dangerous, however, every event you have to swim in dirty water. Remember Brazil, the Olympic Games in Brazil, it was dirty and it’s today dirty. I don’t know whether the measure of the water is okay."

4. SOUNDBITE (English) Arno Freudenberger, German tourist:
"In this? Maybe next year or in two years. They take one billion euros for cleaning the river but maybe they need another billion."
5. Various of crowds and statues
6. SOUNDBITE (French) Simon Chauvin, tourist:
"It’s a tough decision for athletes (to hold the triathlon in the Seine River) because there were some issues with the organization and they had to postpone the race just hours before it was due to start, but when it does work, it works great. Also, everybody’s happy and the atmosphere is great."
7. Spectators
8. SOUNDBITE (French) Simon Chauvin, tourist:
"It’s a serious issue (the water quality), it’s true, it’s not water with chlorine, so one has to be careful but it’s like everything, we place our trust in the experts that checked the levels, the rules and if they greenlight it then they greenlight it."
9. Various of crowds
10. SOUNDBITE (French) Maud Stringer and Etienne Stringer, Canadian tourists:
Etienne: "For a few hundred dollars possibly."
Maud: "I would put my feet in just to say that I took a dip in the Seine but perhaps I wouldn’t actually swim in the Seine."
Etienne: "If there was a medal to win, maybe we might do it too. I saw the Paris Mayor do it with her special little kit. Let’s just say she didn’t stay very long in the water so I think the athletes are very brave, going for a swim for several hours, it’s quite impressive."
11. Various of security
12. Spectator
13. SOUNDBITE (English) Sue Barrett and Robin Bone, British tourists:
Barrett: "I think they’re very brave but I think they’ve spent a lot of money cleaning it up so let’s hope it all works."
Bone: "A billion pounds so this is a very expensive swim."
14. Police officers
15. SOUNDBITE (English) Sue Barrett and Robin Bone, British tourists:
Barrett: "Yes, of course."
Bone: "Yeah, I’d take a swim."
Barrett: "I think if they’ve cleaned it up for a billion euros, I think it should be alright. We’d do that?"
Bone: "I would actually. Just don’t take any water in."
Barrett: "Don’t breath."
Bone: "You need a snorkel. I’d swim with a snorkel and a mask."
Barrett: "Maybe we’re just brave British, I don’t know."
Bone: "I’d do it. 100% I’d do it."

STORYLINE:
Spectators at the Olympic Games in Paris on Monday were ready to watch as a delayed swimming triathlon event got underway after organizers said the bacteria levels in the Seine River were acceptable.

Organizers on Sunday night made the decision to hold the event Monday morning with the swimming legs in the Seine.

"It’s a tough decision for athletes because there were some issues with the organization," said tourist Simon Chauvin.

"But when it does work, it works great," he added.

The plan to hold the swimming portion of the triathlons and the marathon swimming events in the Seine was an ambitious one.

Swimming in the river has, with some exceptions, been off-limits since 1923 because it has been too toxic.

Paris poured in $1.5 billion (1.4 billion euros) to try to clean it up.
