“I first want to wish a speedy recovery to the athlete. This is our first reaction. We are monitoring this closely with the IOC members and with Paris 2024. On this, which raises the question of the swimming suitability of the Seine River – you didn’t specifically ask the question but that’s what comes to mind – it’s always a difficult decision to make because it implies many things. I’ve been an athlete myself and our role, us here, is to protect the athletes because they are the first ones who want to dive (in the Seine River) and we are here to guarantee that this can be done in acceptable public health conditions.”

STORYLINE:
IOC member and five-time Olympic biathlon champion Martin Fourcade on Monday wished a speedy recovery to the Belgian athlete who fell ill.

“Our role is to protect the athletes”, Fourcade said, responding to concerns about the Seine’s suitability for swimming.

Belgium’s Olympic committee announced Sunday that it would withdraw its team from the mixed relay triathlon at the Paris Olympics after one of its competitors who swam in the Seine fell ill.

Claire Michel, who competed in the women’s triathlon Wednesday, “is unfortunately ill and will have to withdraw from the competition” the Belgian Olympic and Interfederal Committee said in a statement.

The Belgian committee’s statement did not elaborate on Michel’s illness but it comes after concerns over the river’s water quality.

Organizers had said that water quality tests done the day of the individual triathlon races showed “very good” bacteria levels.
