"I presented the initiatives I have undertaken with presidents Gustavo Petro (of Colombia) and (Andres Manuel) Lopez Obrador (of Mexico) in relation to the political process in Venezuela. Respect for tolerance or respect for popular sovereignty is what drives us to defend the transparency of the results. Commitment to peace is what drives us to call the parties to dialogue and promote understanding between the government and the opposition.”

"And what we talked about with President Lula is that we want, during our term in office, to achieve real instances of integration. For example, the Bioceanic Road Corridor that goes from Mato Grosso do Sul to the ports of Iquique, Antofagasta, Tocopilla. This will mean a very significant change in Brazil’s trade with Asia Pacific, where we know how important these markets are. China is today the main trading partner of both countries. And we proposed with President Lula to be able to inaugurate this corridor during our terms in office."

STORYLINE:
Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva on Monday stepped up pressure on his historic leftist ally, Venezuela’s President Nicolas Maduro, demanding transparency and calling for dialogue with members of the Venezuelan opposition.

In a press conference alongside Chile’s left-wing President Gabriel Boric, Lula said that “respect for popular sovereignty is what moves us to defend the transparency of the (election) results.”

“The commitment to peace is what leads us to call the parties to dialogue,” Lula said during his visit to the Chilean capital of Santiago. He said Brazil sought to promote “understanding between the government and opposition.”

Boric, who questioned the legitimacy of Maduro’s claim of victory in Venezuela’s July 28 election, told reporters that he and Lula discussed the situation in Venezuela on Monday, without elaborating.

The leaders did not take questions and their carefully worded statements signaled how leftist governments in the region are pursuing a delicate balancing act even as they voice doubts about the official election results.
