"We have done a lot in order for the Ukrainian Air Force to switch to a new standard of aviation, to Western combat aviation. From the beginning of this war, we talked with our partners about the need to close our Ukrainian skies from Russian missiles and Russian planes. We have held hundreds of meetings and negotiations to strengthen our aviation capabilities. To strengthen the capabilities of our Air Defence Forces, our Defence Forces, we often heard the words in response, ‘it is impossible’ but we have already made possible what was our ambition, our defence needs. Now it really is a reality, a reality in our sky, F-16s in Ukraine."

"I can’t give you details with missions, I think you will see, maybe not all of them, but you will see the result. We will decide to comment if it was a result with F-16 or not. It’s not, I mean, it’s not the moment for this. I think it’s very dangerous for today, we need to do all the security measures which have been discussed with our partners about using F16s. But anyway these jets are in our sky."

"We need to develop technical capabilities to enable the use of other aviation from neighbouring countries against certain missiles that are launched, yes, they hit Ukraine, but they are directed at our neighbours, partners, of course, especially the countries of the (NATO) alliance. I think this decision is probably a difficult one for our partners, they are always afraid of unnecessary escalation. We are struggling with this, we will work on it, and I think we have a good option of a NATO-Ukraine council."

STORYLINE:
Ukraine’s newly-arrived F-16 fighter jets were put on display by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Sunday, who said the planes will boost the country’s war effort against Russia.
"These jets are in our sky," said Zelenskyy, standing in front of two of the fighter jets as two others flew overhead in close formation.
F-16 jets, sporting Ukraine’s trident insignia on their tails and draped in camouflage netting, were a dramatic background for Zelenskyy’s address on Armed Forces Day, an event held under tight security at an undisclosed location to protect the fighter jets from Russian attacks.
Ukraine is also trying to get neighbouring countries to help defend it against Russian missiles.
