Germany formally joined the United Nations Command (UNC) on Friday, making it the 18th member state and marking the first expansion of the multinational force in more than a decade.
German Defence Minister, Boris Pistorius, took part in a ceremony in Pyeongtaek, South Korea, marking Germany’s new membership to the US-led group which works to secure lasting peace on the Korean Peninsula.
Pistorius said Germany’s accession to the UNC is a clear sign of the country’s commitment to ensure stability in the region.
Paul LaCamera, Commander of U.S Forces Korea, welcomed the move, saying "the addition of Germany diversifies the perspectives and resources available to United Nations Command and enhances our collective expertise and capability."
During a news conference following the accession ceremony, Pistorius emphasized that neighboring countries such as Russia and North Korea should not see Germany’s accession as a provocation.
"We are just standing with out commitment for the rules-based international order. Nothing more and nothing less," said Pistorius.
