"No one made this decision lightly to deport a murderer sentenced to life imprisonment after only a few years in detention. And that is why it was important for us to have an obligation to protect German nationals as well as solidarity with the USA."

STORYLINE:
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said Thursday the wide-ranging prisoner exchange between Russia and the West involved tough decisions and followed months of confidential talks.
A central part of the swap was the release of Vadim Krasikov, who was serving a life sentence in Germany for what judges concluded was a Russian state-ordered killing in Berlin in 2019.
Speaking from Cologne Bonn Airport, having interrupted his vacation, Scholz said “no one made this decision lightly to deport a murderer sentenced to life imprisonment after only a few years in detention.”
“The state’s interest in enforcing the prison sentence had to be weighed against the risk to life and limb of innocent people imprisoned in Russia,” he added.
He said that, because of the significance of the matter, he informed German opposition leader Friedrich Merz early on, and that Merz assured him he agreed with the government’s decision.
