Amman, Jordan – 1 August 2024
1. Various of Luxembourg Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Xavier Bettel meeting with Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi
2. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Ayman Safadi, Jordanian Foreign Minister:
"The visit comes at a very difficult time as the Israeli escalation in the region continues, with the assassination of the head of the Hamas political bureau yesterday. And that is a crime that we’ve condemned, it is a crime that brings escalation, that represents a clear violation of international law, a clear violation of the sovereignty of states, and will indeed push towards more escalation, and threaten to expand the war regionally."

4. SOUNDBITE (English) Ayman Safadi, Jordanian Foreign Minister:
"Yesterday, Israel assassinated (Hamas’) Ismail Haniyeh. He was the one who was negotiating the exchange deal. So how on Earth is a country that wants to conclude a deal kills the main interlocutor in those negotiations? So, when Netanyahu decided and sent his missiles to assassinate Haniyeh in Iran in violation of the sovereignty of another country and bringing escalation to a very high level, is that somebody who wants the deal to work? And all the work that has been done by Egypt, Qatar, the U.S. to bring a deal that would have brought a cease-fire, that would have released hostages or released prisoner – Israel decided to undermine all of that yesterday."

6. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Ayman Safadi, Jordanian Foreign Minister:
"Creating conditions that threaten the expansion of the war by also violating Lebanese sovereignty, which we also clearly and explicitly condemn. We in the kingdom (Jordan) want to get past this catastrophe. That is why our message is clear: overcoming this disaster must begin with the international community taking clear positions and taking clear measures that curb this Israeli aggression and oblige Israel to respect international law and international humanitarian law. The future of the region cannot be wagered on the ideology of elimination and brutal vindictiveness of the Israeli prime minister and members of his government."
7. Safadi and Bettel
8. SOUNDBITE (English) Ayman Safadi, Jordanian Foreign Minister:
"The first step towards de-escalation is to end this brutal, barbaric war on Gaza. Allow Palestinians in Gaza to have food and medicine, stop measures that are killing the prospects for peace in the West Bank, and then engage in a plan to implement the two-state solution, whereby the Palestinians will know that they have a future to live like any other people."
9. Wide of news conference
10. SOUNDBITE (English) Ayman Safadi, Jordanian Foreign Minister:
"If there is any escalation, our first priority is: protect Jordan, protect the safety of Jordanians. And that means anybody who tries to violate our skies to the extent that we can, we will stop it because Jordan will not be a battleground for anybody."
11. Safadi and Bettel
12. SOUNDBITE (English) Ayman Safadi, Jordanian Foreign Minister:
"The party who is keeping the threat of war alive and threatening all of us must be held accountable. That party is Israel, and Israel has to be accountable for its action. It cannot continue to commit murder with impunity, that is the fact. It cannot continue to jeopardise the future of the whole region to more wars and more horrors without being accountable."
