STORYLINE:
Hopes of finding more survivors after landslides in southern India waned Thursday as the death toll rose to 194, police said.
Teams of rescue workers searched through mud and debris for a third day after multiple landslides set off by torrential rains swept through Wayanad district in the state of Kerala early on Tuesday.
Continual rain and strong river currents hampered rescue efforts, as villagers helped professional rescue teams top search for bodies.
“Some bodies were found more than 50 km away from here down the river,” said Rafiq, a local shopkeeper who uses one name.
More than 5,500 people have been rescued, according to local authorities, thanks to the efforts of some 1,167 rescue workers, including fire officers and soldiers, as well as members of the coast guard and the National Disaster Response Force.
State officials said Tuesday’s landslides were one of the worst natural disasters Kerala has witnessed.
