Khan Younis, Gaza Strip – 1 August 2024
1. Various of people walking past destroyed buildings
2. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Attieh al-Da’alseh, man from Khan Younis:
"We lived through it (the war), a tragedy and suffering. We’ve not seen such tragedy and suffering before, we did not expect this to happen and we did not expect it to gone for this long. God willing, it will end soon, but it does not look like it will end soon with the way things are going because Israel keeps escalating. And after (Hamas leader Ismail) Haniyeh’s assassination, things will get harder and there won’t be a solution to our situation. We hope to God that it will end as soon as possible."
3. Various of people near rubble
4. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Ahmad Othman, displaced man from Rafah:
"There is no life left for the people of Gaza in general. After 300 days of war, we do not see that there is an end to the war. The way we see it that there is no end to the war. What Netanyahu has done, assassinating Abu al-Abd (a nickname for) Haniyeh in the middle of negotiations as we waited for any news that would end the war. We were waiting, we would follow the news hour after hour and minute by minute. We were waiting for any news to end the war, so we go back to our destroyed homes. We want to settle down. Enough with the destruction, we are exhausted."
5. Various of destruction
6. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Rasha Abu Madi, woman from Khan Younis:
"We see things getting worse. No one cares about anyone (us), as if we are not human beings. All of our children and brothers were martyred. They (the Israelis) didn’t leave a single person behind who is not mourning (a loss). Every home is in mourning. God suffices me and he is the best disposer of affairs. They (the Israelis) bombed homes and destroyed the children. Under what justification do you strike safe homes at night while the people are asleep? What did the children do wrong for them to be displaced?

8. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Rasha Abu Madi, woman from Khan Younis:
"We feel devastated. After 300 days of war, we feel devastated. How else would we feel? We do not know where to go, but rather things are getting worse."

STORYLINE:
Displaced people in the Gaza Strip shared a grim outlook on Thursday following 300 days of war as hopes fade for a cease-fire assassination in Tehran of Hamas’ Ismail Haniyeh.
In the southern city of Khan Younis, Palestinians tried to get on with their day in the heat, walking between buildings that have been bombed..
The ones that still stand are partially damaged.
Some residents rummage through the rubble to find whatever they can salvage.
"It does not look like it will end soon with the way things are going because Israel keeps escalating. And after Haniyeh’s assassination, things will get harder," said Attieh al-Da’alseh from Khan Younis.
No one immediately claimed responsibility for the assassination but suspicion quickly fell on Israel, which has vowed to kill Haniyeh and other leaders of Hamas over the group’s Oct. 7 attack on Israel that sparked the war in Gaza.
Haniyeh’s killing threw into disarray months of efforts at reaching a deal for a cease-fire in Gaza and a hostage release.
Haniyeh had been a main negotiator in those talks.
"We were waiting, we would follow the news hour after hour and minute by minute. We were waiting for any news to end the war, so we go back to our destroyed homes," said Ahmad Othman, who was displaced from Rafah.
"There is no life left for the people of Gaza," he added.
