2. SOUNDBITE (English) Sen. Mitch McConnell, Minority Leader:
"I couldn’t be more disappointed. This is a man who was chairman of the Judiciary Committee for a long time. He absolutely knows what he recommended is unconstitutional to try to limit the terms of Supreme Court justices who, under the Constitution, are appointed for life. That shows you the depths to which they have gone lately to attack the Supreme Court, because they don’t like the current makeup of the court and decisions that they disapprove of. The way to change that is to win the presidency and the Senate, and to appoint people that you like, but not to try to break break the Supreme Court. We saw that even when they were reluctant to protect the Supreme Court members who were being threatened at their homes. So this is a level of, that I think is just simply unacceptable. I’m disappointed in the president for doing it. I know he knows better. And, such a proposal will be dead on arrival in Congress."

3. SOUNDBITE (English) Sen. John Thune, (R) South Dakota / Republican Whip
"This is the worst disaster. 10 million illegals have come into this country since the Biden-Harris presidency, since they took office. And if you look at just the number of people who are coming into the country on the terrorist watch list that’s now approaching 400 people, this is a national security threat, a national security crisis. And it has been an absolute, utter and abysmal failure on behalf of the Biden-Harris administration. The real important part of leadership is taking responsibility and finding solutions. Neither of which they’re willing to do on this issue. And the vice president is scheduled to go to Texas tomorrow. But I don’t have any expectation that she’s going to go down to the southern border and look at the problems that have been created by their policies. But the fact of the matter is, this administration and their policies have led us to where we have a disaster that is unprecedented in American history, made simply by their own policies."

STORYLINE:
Senate Republican leaders strongly criticized President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris on two important issues in the unfolding 2024 presidential election – Supreme Court reform and immigration.
President Joe Biden on Monday proposed major changes for the U.S. Supreme Court: an enforceable code of ethics, term limits for justices and a constitutional amendment that would limit the justices’ recent decision on presidential immunity.
Biden’s proposal drew a strong rebuke from Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell.
"He absolutely knows what he recommended is unconstitutional to try to limit the terms of Supreme Court justices who, under the Constitution, are appointed for life," McConnell said. "That shows you the depths to which they have gone lately to attack the Supreme Court because they don’t like the current makeup of the court and decisions that they disapprove of," he said.
"The way to change that is to win the presidency and the Senate, and to appoint people that you like, but not to try to break break the Supreme Court," he said .
Other Republican leaders directed their fire toward Vice President Harris, who gained widespread support from Democrats when Biden decided to drop his bid for reelection and endorsed Harris instead.
