STORYLINE:
It was very nearly a gold medal for France, but at Club France the atmosphere was still celebratory.
Thousands of spectators at the vast French Olympic house watched the women’s team epee final on Tuesday and with France within touching distance of a gold medal the crowd were making noise to match the occasion.
Alberta Santuccio got the winning touch for Italy in overtime against France’s Auriane Mallo-Breton to complete a hard-fought 30-29 win for gold.
But spirits were not dampened at Club France, which can hold up to 20,000 in the outside space.
"It’s a great feat and the atmosphere is incredible," said physiotherapist Olivier Legris, visiting from Montpellier, who was hoping for gold.
"It’s a good day and a great time here."
