20. SOUNDBITE (English) Sara Bonfanti, International Rescue Committee:
“So these centres should follow, you know are under Italian jurisdiction, should follow Italian laws. So again in principle this is going to be the case. But it’s also true that we don’t know how things will deploy and it is definitely going to be harder to monitor the situation, considering that, you know, the centres, even the two centres that are not the pre-departure centre that is basically a prison, are very much a closed space, very much isolated. And so it’s going to definitely be harder for people to access external resources."

23. SOUNDBITE (English) Sara Bonfanti, International Rescue Committee:
“It’s cruel, meaning that people will try to pursue different routes to reach Europe. And usually these routes become more and more dangerous. And we have no certainty about the standards that will be applied in these centres. As we all know, it’s difficult for Italy itself to meet the basic needs of asylum-seekers that land in Italy, on Italian soil. It’s going to be even harder to meet their basic needs, to uphold their rights in a third country.”
