STORYLINE:
Jerusalem’s mayor and the relatives of hostages in the Gaza Strip held an event in Jerusalem on Wednesday ahead of the 300-day mark since the beginning of the war.
Family members called for the release of the hostages who have been held in Gaza since October.
Earlier on Wednesday, Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh was assassinated in Tehran, Iran’s paramilitary Revolutionary Guard said.
No one immediately claimed responsibility for the assassination but suspicion fell on Israel, which has vowed to kill Haniyeh and other leaders of Hamas over the group’s Oct. 7 attack on Israel that killed 1,200 people and saw some 250 others taken hostage.
Israel has now pronounced dead more than a third of the roughly 110 hostages who remain in Hamas captivity.
Dani Miran, father of Omri who was taken hostage, said he does not care about assassinations and simply wants his son to come back home.
"I’m not interested in this assassination or that assassination, I’m interested in the return of my son and the rest of the hostages home safe and sound," he said.
The apparent assassination comes at a precarious time, as United States President Joe Biden’s administration has tried to push Hamas and Israel to agree to at least a temporary cease-fire and hostage release deal.
Sacha Ariev, sister of Karina who was taken hostage, said it does not matter how the hostages come home as long as they do.
"We need to cry out and ask for the hostages to return home to their families – all of them – and fast, doesn’t matter which way," she said.
The devastating Israel-Hamas war has become the deadliest and longest in the Arab-Israeli conflict.
More than 39,000 Palestinians have been killed, according to health officials in Gaza.
