STORYLINE:
Taiwan’s Vice President, Bi-Khim Hsiao, on Tuesday emphasized the shared spirit of solidarity, freedom, and friendship at a China-focused summit in Taipei, likening it to the values celebrated at the Paris Olympic Games.
The summit, attended by members of the Inter-Parliamentary Alliance on China (IPAC), served as a platform for international cooperation against common challenges posed by China’s geopolitical actions.
In her address, Hsiao expressed gratitude to the IPAC members for their united efforts in tackling some of today’s most pressing global issues.
"Taiwan is not alone," she declared, acknowledging the collective support demonstrated at the summit.
German lawmaker Reinhard Bütikofer reinforced this sentiment, stating that IPAC members are committed to resisting any attempts by China to undermine the democratic order.
"I’m not saying we have any intention to even think about toppling China, but when China pursues intentions to topple our democratic order, we fight back," Bütikofer said.
Former U.S. President Donald Trump, who suggested in a recent interview that Taiwan should pay for its defense provided by the United States.
Bütikofer countered Trump’s remarks by pointing out that Taiwan has already paid $19 billion for arms purchased from the U.S., which have yet to be delivered.
"Trump should look up the facts," Bütikofer asserted.
Solomon Islands lawmaker Peter Kenilorea announced that six new countries have formally joined IPAC, further expanding the alliance’s global reach and influence.
