STORYLINE:
LEADIN:
London baked Tuesday (July 30) as temperatures soared to the UK’s joint hottest day of the year.
The UK’s Met Office said temperatures hit 31.9 degrees Celsius in London’s St. James’s Park, matching the year’s previous hottest day, recorded on July 19.
STORYLINE:
The Met Office says high pressure is the dominant force for the UK’s weather at present, with warmth for many in the south and plenty of sunshine.
Temperatures are likely to peak at around 32 degrees Celsius in southeast England on Tuesday and Wednesday.
The 31.9 degrees Celsius recorded at London’s St. James’s Park on Tuesday matched the year’s previous hottest day, recorded on July 19, also at St. James’s Park.
In nearby Regents Park, Londoners sunbathed and sat in the shade to keep cool.
The UK Health Security Agency has issued a Yellow Heat Health Alert for parts of England.
