STORYLINE:
Hundreds of members Syria’s Druze community in Quneitra gathered to pay respects to the victims in Majdal Shams, just a stone’s throw from the Golan Heights.
Israel has blamed Hezbollah for the rocket that slammed into a soccer field killing 12 children who were playing.
In an unusual move, Hezbollah denied any role in the strike.
The strike in Majdal Shams in the Golan Heights, a majority Druze area, has caused anger amongst the Druze community.
The Druze have a complicated relationship with Israel, with many maintaining their allegiance to Syria and refusing Israeli citizenship which would also make them eligible for mandatory military conscription.
The Golan Heights was captured by Israel from Syria in the 1967 Mideast War and annexed in 1981.
So many Druze within the Golan Heights believe they are Syrian and have rejected Israeli annexation.
Connections remain strong between Druze members from Syria and Druze members in Israel-annexed Golan Heights with many familial connections between the two.
“There is an attempt to plant discord and division between the same sect and between the people of a united nation,” said Sheikh Youssef Jarbouh, one of Syria’s top Druze sheikhs who attended.
“They are aware of this attempted discord, and God willing it will not work.”
Hundreds of people came from different villages across Syria to commemorate the victims with the tragedy hitting close to home for many.
Hamad al Rashid, who came from Mount Hermon to pay his respects, blames Israel for the strike.
"We offer our condolences to ourselves and to all of them for the righteous martyrs who fell at the hands of the treacherous Zionists," he said.
Quneitra Mayor, Jawdat al Tawil, said the community is angry.
“They killed the happiness of these children. There is more anger now. They (Israel) want to kill the person and walk in his funeral and it didn’t work. Our families in Majdal Shams and the Golan heights kicking out all who tried to participate in the funerals of the martyrs."
