STORYLINE:
The residents of southern Lebanon were on edge on Sunday after Israeli authorities said a rocket from Lebanon struck a soccer field in the Israeli-controlled Golan Heights, killing 12 children and teens.
The strike raised fears of a broader regional war between Israel and Hezbollah, which denied a role in the attack.
Shebaa, a village situated on the slopes of Mount Hermon in southern Lebanon and a stronghold pf Hezbollah, faces an uneasy calm as its residents go about with everyday life.
"The situation has scared people. It’s in God’s hands but the people are afraid," said Abdo Nassif, a resident of Shebaa village.
The village’s streets were quiet on Sunday and elderly men were seen playing backgammon, a common pastime that might offer a momentary distraction from the prevailing tension.
“I doubt that there will be a strike, but nothing is far-fetched when it comes to the enemy,” said Abdallah Dalal, a villager from Shebaa.
He added that some families with young children have chosen to leave due to safety concerns.
On Saturday just before sunset, a rocket slammed into a soccer pitch where dozens of children and teens were playing in the Druze town of Majdal Shams, which is located about 12 kilometers (7 miles) south of Lebanon and next to the Syrian border.
Twelve young people between the ages of 10 and 20 were killed, and 20 were wounded, according to the Israeli military.
In a rare move, Hezbollah denied it was responsible for the attack, but Israeli military’s Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Herzi Halevi said what was fired was a Falaq rocket with a 53-kilogram warhead that belonged to Hezbollah.
