"We really wanted to show that France was capable of organising this unprecedented opening ceremony, in the centre of town, on the Seine river. It was such an incredible moment. Even the rain didn’t prevent us from enjoying this magical moment. It did make our job a little harder but up to the very end, our teams were able to maintain this absolutely unprecedented level of ambition, with so much complexity – very tough but very exciting and thrilling to the end."

3. SOUNDBITE (French) Tony Estanguet, President of Paris 2024 Organising Committee:
"With this ceremony, we wanted to showcase France’s culture, ambition, audacity, creativity with a tad of impertinence, to generate reactions. We managed to reach, I think, a very large audience. Each and everyone was able to pick and choose some very precious and magical moments and I’m extremely grateful for all of Paris 2024 teams’ hard work."

4. SOUNDBITE (French) Thierry Reboul, Executive director of Paris 2024 ceremonies:
"Today, we’re filled with this satisfaction of a job well done I think. I couldn’t imagine, and I know the city well, but I couldn’t imagine how complex an Olympic ceremony was. I’d been warned but, maybe it’s a good thing that we didn’t listen! We might not have embarked upon this crazy adventure. So that’s the feeling and I, too, would like to share it with all of our teams."

5. SOUNDBITE (French) Thomas Jolly, Artistic director of Paris 2024 opening ceremony:
"Everybody was under the rain after all but we stood firm together to celebrate our shared humanity and I hope, from the messages and front pages I read this morning, that people identified with this and were able to say, yes, we’re all different but we’re all together."

6. SOUNDBITE (French) Thomas Jolly, Artistic director of Paris 2024 opening ceremony:
"My goal wasn’t to be subversive, make fun of anyone or shock people. My goal was simply to say that we’re a part of this ‘big we’ and last night, we shared republican ideals around inclusion, kindness, generosity, solidarity – ideas that we greatly need I think."

STORYLINE:
Paris 2024 Organising Committee President Tony Estanguet said that Friday evening’s Olympic opening ceremony was an "incredible moment" that was not dampened by the weather.
"With this ceremony, we wanted to showcase France’s culture, ambition, audacity, creativity with a tad of impertinence, to generate reactions," said Estanguet during a news conference on Saturday.
Subversion ran like a silken thread through the wacky, wonderful and rule-breaking Olympic opening ceremony the French capital used to astound, bemuse and, at times, poke a finger in the eye of global audiences on Friday night, launching the 2024 Games.
Instead of a traditional march into a stadium, about 6,800 athletes paraded on more than 90 boats on the Seine River for 6 kilometres (3.7 miles). Only a few thousand stayed for the final performance, many apparently deterred by the downpour.
Underneath the Eiffel Tower’s Olympic rings, Celine Dion showed she’s back to singing form after a career-threatening diagnosis as her vocals soared on Edith Piaf’s “Hymn to Love.”
