STORYLINE:
Venezuela’s government Thursday closed out the official presidential campaign season with demonstrations that drew thousands of people to the streets of the capital, Caracas.
President Nicolás Maduro, who is seeking a third six-year term, appeared before supporters on a massive stage set up on one of the city’s main roads and rallied attendees with musical intermissions and dances throughout his speech.
“We will not allow them to continue doing damage, their time is up, if they run the light, they will regret it for 200 years”, Maduro warned referring to the opposition led by Maria Corina Machado and candidate Edmundo Gonzalez.
He told the crowd, part of it transported to Caracas on state-owned buses, his opponents are promoters of violence and described himself as a man of peace.
“Who of the 10 candidates guarantees peace and stability?” asked Maduro, rhetorically. He then asked them if they wanted “a puppet president” who would privatize state-owned industries.
The rally marks the closing of the electoral campaign for Sunday’s elections that is giving the ruling United Socialist Party of Venezuela its toughest electoral test in decades.
The campaign was dominated in the previous weeks by polarization and tension. President Maduro has said a victory of the opposition bloc, led by María Corina Machado with the candidacy of Edmundo González, could unleash a “bloodbath” in the country.
On Thursday morning the government installed platforms in several points of Caracas to receive thousands of Maduro’s followers and public employees, coming from different parts of the country, who traveled to the capital to participate in the closing of the campaign.
