“Under Honecker, the Palace of the Republic was built between 73 and 76. It was both a state and cultural center. The People’s Chamber (GDR parliament) was in it, had its place there. And at the same time, it was also a cultural palace, so to speak, with a lot to offer the citizens of the GDR.”

“The Palace of the Republic, which stood there, it was actually only in use for 13 years, so it was closed in September ’89 because of the asbestos contamination. And then it stood there for a long time and at some point, it became more and more of a ruin. It was used again for cultural purposes in the 2000s, but the decision to demolish it had already been made. And there was an incredibly fierce debate about what to do with the site. Whether to do it. So of course, there were many who protested against the demolition of the palace and at the same time there were many who were in favour of this building or the reconstruction of the Berlin Palace.”

“It’s been 35 years since the fall of the Berlin Wall, and these anniversaries are always a time when people look back. Many young people are interested in the past and a lot of them come here. But also a lot of grandparents, for example, come to the exhibition with their grandchildren to really look and learn from the exhibition.”
