“It’s hard for me to explain the pain that pierces my heart for over nine months, yes, over nine months, between hope and despair, until the terrible day when I realized that despair prevailed over hope. Yagev, I know that with all the pain you faced you knew that you were loved, loving and loved.”

STORYLINE:
Hundreds of Israelis attended a memorial service on Wednesday in memory of an Israeli hostage killed in Gaza.

The Israeli military said on Monday that they had determined the deaths of Yagev Buchshtab, 35, and Alex Dancyg, 76, who were kidnapped from their homes in southern Israel on Oct. 7, based on intelligence.

The military did not say when the hostages had died.

In the Lahav kibbutz in southern Israel, hundreds came to mourn Yagev Buchshtab who was taken from Kibbutz Nirim on Oct. 7 along with his wife, Rimon Buchshtab-Kirsht who was later released during the November ceasefire deal after 50 days in captivity.

There are approximately 120 hostages still being held in Gaza, though Israel believes more than 40 are no longer alive.

Monday’s announcement heightens pressure on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to agree to a cease-fire proposal that could secure the return of the hostages still held in Gaza and end the nine-month war.

It comes as Mr Netanyahu visited the U.S. and addressed Congress in a fiery speech where he defended Israel’s war in Gaza and condemned American protesters.

Several top Democratic lawmakers decided to publicly boycott his address.

Netanyahu vowed to press on with the war until “total victory,” disappointing hopes by some that the Israeli leader’s visit to the United States could bring some breakthrough in negotiations for a cease-fire and hostage release.
