“When I did the internal medicine year everyone knew I was a rapper. In Puerto Rico even the patients said: look there goes PJ Sin Suela. The first month maybe they doubted and thought I came to the hospital touring to sing, but I was tending to patients. After a month everyone knew that for me it was no joke, and to say the truth I am very serious in what I do.”

STORYLINE:
Aunque es médico, Pedro Juan Vázquez es más conocido en Puerto Rico como un rapero que usa el nombre artístico de PJ Sin Suela.
El hombre de 34 años busca satisfacer su pasión por la música al tiempo que ayuda a los necesitados y crea conciencia sobre una crisis de salud en la isla de 3,2 millones de habitantes.
Vázquez viaja desde San Juan, la capital, a las áreas remotas de la isla al menos una vez a la semana para tratar a las comunidades desatendidas que luchan contra las secuelas de huracanes, terremotos y una economía frágil.
Después de colgar su bata de médico, pasa su tiempo produciendo e interpretando música en la que aborda temas como la desigualdad social, la pobreza y la violencia armada.
Actualmente, Puerto Rico se enfrenta a cortes de energía, así como a una escasez de profesionales médicos, y muchos han huido a Estados Unidos continental en busca de mejores salarios.
Puerto Rico ha perdido más de 8.600 médicos, de casi 18.800, en poco más de una década, según un informe de 2023 del grupo de expertos The Center for a New Economy. Se espera que el problema se agrave en los próximos años.
