"The Olympic Games are no stranger, like many big events, to lots of security. But these are the Paris Games. And this is a city that had been repeatedly hit by deadly extremist attacks, most notably in 2015. Security has been ramped up to absolutely gargantuan levels. We have 45,000 police and gendarmes in the streets of the city, patrolling, and another 10,000 soldiers on top of that who are lending helping hands. The security has been ramped up for the opening ceremony, that’s coming on Friday and that’s going to be unprecedented."

"It’s going to be on the River Seine that runs all the way through the heart of the French capital, and both side of that river are now been fenced off with 2-meter high metal barriers. Now, to get through them you need a QR code. This is a special pass you need to have, apply for in advance, to get through these barriers. And without them Parisians and tourists who are now coming for the Games are discovering that it’s very hard to get around without them."

"The Eiffel Tower, the Louvre, many of these places are now behind these barriers or you have to get through these barriers to cross the city, cross the river. And this is making life a little bit complicated."

"And the authorities are taking other measures too. They’re worried, of course, about a repeat of some sort of extremist attack. They’ve also got the international background of war in Ukraine, war in Gaza to think about too, those tensions are also having an impact on the security at these games. The Interior Ministry was saying today that they have refused access to thousands of people, and amongst them there are about 1,000 people who they consider may be a risk of, what they call foreign interference, perhaps spies, perhaps other people from the countries that they feel don’t have France’s best interests at heart."

STORYLINE:
Tourists in Paris are finding getting around quite difficult these days.
Most of the city’s landmarks have become the venues of the upcoming Olympic Games and are cordoned off with security barriers.
To get through you need a special pass, which should have been applied for in advance.
AP correspondent John Leicester explained that security has been ramped up to "absolutely gargantuan levels."
"We have 45,000 police and gendarmes in the streets of the city, patrolling, and another 10,000 soldiers on top of that who are lending helping hands."
Three days before the start of the 2024 Olympics, France’s interior minister said about 1,000 people suspected of possibly meddling for a foreign power have been blocked from attending the Olympics.
That zone runs along the banks of the Seine, where the opening ceremony is will take place on Friday.
