STORYLINE:
Black smoke billowed into the sky over the southern Gaza Strip on Wednesday as Israel’s war against Hamas continued.
Plumes of smoke were visible in the distance from the Khan Younis area, where displaced Palestinians live in makeshift camps.
The war began with an assault by Hamas militants on southern Israel on Oct. 7 that killed 1,200 people, most of them civilians, and took about 250 hostages.
About 120 remain held, about a third of them believed to be dead, according to Israeli authorities.
Gaza’s Health Ministry said the death toll has surpassed 39,000 Palestinians killed and 89,800 wounded.
The ministry’s count does not distinguish between combatants and civilians.
