STORYLINE:
With the start of the Olympics just days away, athletes from around the world are touching down ahead of Friday’s opening ceremony.
All of them have high expectations and are hoping to perform at their best.
Ukrainian athletes are present despite the backdrop of war in their homeland, they hope their performances will help boost morale back home.
“First of all, we are very grateful to our armed forces and those people who are now at home. I wanted to cheer them up a little, so that they would be distracted from all the troubles. I understand that it is very difficult and almost impossible at the moment, but I wanted the victory here to be the same as the victory at home,” Anastasiya Kozhenkova, a Ukrainian rower, told the AP, waiting for her baggage to pop up at the belt.
Meanwhile, Vincenzo Abbagnale, an Italian rower, spoke on arrival.
“We’ve arrived in Paris and we are (have) good preparation. We hope for the better performance that we can. I hope for our best performance,” he said.
