STORYLINE:
Taiwan on Tuesday held a series of drills testing New Taipei City’s ability to respond to missile strikes and evacuations.

It’s president on Tuesday stressed the need for the island to continue exercises simulating an attack by enemies amid ‘changing geopolitics’.

Lai Ching-te, also known by his English name William Lai, spoke as the annual Han Kuang exercises continued across the country.

The exercises, which started on July 22 and will finish on July 26, are the first simulation drills since Lai took office.

Remarking on the exercises, he reiterated the importance of staging them, amid heightened tensions with China.

Lai’s Democratic Progressive Party rejects Beijing’s demands it recognize Taiwan as a Chinese territory.

Naval and land exercises also took place in other parts of the self-governing island democracy.

However, an approaching typhoon prompted the cancellation of air force drills off Taiwan’s east coast.
