STORYLINE:
Palestinian families are forced to sleep on sidewalks and inside Nasser Medical complex, the largest hospital in southern Gaza, after being ordered to by the Israeli military to evacuate parts of Khan Younis.
The Israeli military on Monday ordered the evacuation of crowded areas in the Gaza Strip it had designated a humanitarian zone, saying it is planning to target Hamas militants there.
On Tuesday, several displaced families who evacuated from east Khan Younis were sitting in the shade along the pavement at Nasser Hospital.
“We left without (taking) any water, food, or mattress. We sleep on the streets. We sleep on the sand. We sleep against one wall to another and from one tree to another,” said Tamam Al Qarra, a displaced woman from east Khan Younis.
Her relative, Hamda al-Qarra told The Associated Press that she and her family are sleeping on the ground at Nasser Hospital without bedding, food, or anything to drink.
"We want to go back. Take us back to our homes. We have had enough of war. They killed us. Where is the world? "she said.
Thousands of Palestinians carried backpacks and walked down dusty roads and collapsed buildings along with their children following evacuation orders.
Many of those families have been displaced multiple times in search of safety, food, and shelter amid the ongoing Israeli air and ground military campaigns.
"We have no place to go. My son is in intensive care and we sat here in the yard. There are no blankets, no food, no drink, and the children are thrown away,” Um Mohammad Abu Te’ma, another displaced woman at Nasser Hospital told The AP.
Sitting near several water bottles, with each one nearly empty, Abu Te’ma pointed that there is no water or bathroom facilities for displaced people to use at Nasser Hospital complex.
Israel’s military campaign in Gaza, sparked by Hamas’ Oct. 7 attack on southern Israel, has killed more than 39,000 people, according to the territory’s Health Ministry, which does not distinguish between combatants and civilians in its count.
Hamas’ October attack killed 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and militants took about 250 hostage.
