“In Venezuela there is going to be peace and tranquility before, during and after July 28. I guarantee it because I am the only candidate who has the support of the people’s power and the communities. Because I am the only candidate who has the strong support of the Venezuelan military of the Bolivarian National Armed Forces. I am their commander-in-chief, supported and loved. And I have the support of Venezuela’s police family.”

STORYLINE:
Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro danced on stage at a rally in La Guaira on Monday, ahead of the final stage of the government’s campaign before elections on Sunday.

The election is predicted to be unlike any other race the ruling party has faced since Chávez swept to power in December 1998 and began transforming Venezuela into what he described as 21st century socialism.

Scheduled for July 28, it comes after years of overlapping crises that have tanked the economy and seen millions of Venezuelans abandon the country, the United Socialist Party of Venezuela – now led by Maduro, seen as Chávez’s ideological heir – is trailing in the polls.

On Monday Maduro took to the stage, dancing to catchy campaign songs in the pouring rain.

For years, opposition politicians have boycotted elections they saw as rigged, but as the government’s popularity has ebbed former rivals have banded together in an attempt to change the government at the ballot box.
