VOICEOVER: Ahmed Al Hassan and his family have been living in a camp for displaced people on the Syria-Turkey border for more than a year. He’s spent the last decade displaced, after he fled his home in Hama to escape Syria’s civil war. Now the camp he’s staying in is suffering a water crisis.

3. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Ahmed Al Hassan, displaced person:

“In the tent, when the water supply was cut during the summer, it is like sitting in an oven. Even if we needed water to wash our faces to cool off, there was no water. The water was cut from us."

VOICEOVER: Around 90% of people living in northern Syria rely solely on humanitarian aid. But dwindling funds have left millions without basic supplies. In the Samidoon camp in the Idlib countryside, the lack of water and sanitation has lead to the spread of disease.

7. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Mohammad Al Ahmed, displaced person:

“These diseases are caused only by lack of water. They cut the water about a month ago and they also cut off trash collections. They haven’t taken the trash in a month and this is causing all these skin diseases.”

VOICEOVER: The camp was managed by Syrian NGO – the International Humanitarian Relief Association. But funding cuts have led to the group being unable to fund water supplies. Last year it was able to supply 206 camps with water – now they can only help 7.

11. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Adel Maree, Coordinator of the Water and Sanitation department for International Humanitarian Relief Association (IYD):
“The additional cost is paid by the camp residents, which may not be equivalent to their daily income."

VOICEOVER: Only 5% of the UN’s appeal for aid to Syria in 2024 has been secured so far, with officials saying it has led to 4 million people going without water and health services.

13. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Musab Al Mohammed, director of Qadimoon camp:
"We ask the donors to directly support this camp, or for us from the countryside of Hama, let us return to our villages. Aid has decreased significantly, to the point where we can’t even afford to buy bread, or even trash disposal, water.”
