Now Catherine Zeta-Jones has given birth to her son, Dylan, with Michael Douglas, the happy couple will have a busy time – adjusting to the demands of parenthood and attempting to plan their wedding, guaranteed to be one of the showbiz highlights of the year.
Not long before the birth, APTN caught up with Michael Douglas to ask him about his plans for fatherhood and marriage.
He said the marriage would not happen until after the baby was delivered.
Meanwhile, British tabloid THE SUN is reporting that new-born Dylan has a dimple on his chin like his famous grandfather, the actor KIRK DOUGLAS.
The newspaper spoke to relatives in Catherine’s home town of Swansea who had been phoned by her excited mother PAT.
A family source said: "Michael thought it was hilarious that even a dimple can skip a generation. It was one of the first things the new parents remarked upon when the baby was born."
Grandad Kirk, 81, is said to be delighted.
And Swansea was having its own party last night, with flags in the streets and champagne being opened to celebrate their newest off-spring.
Baby Dylan was born to the high profile couple at the Cedars-Sinai Medical Centre in Beverly Hills, 0100 GMT on Wednesday (9/8/00) morning. (Incidentally, the same place actress ELIZABETH TAYLOR is currently being treated for pneumonia.)
According to a message on Michael Douglas’ website the baby weighs 7lb 7oz, is 21 inches long and "Mother, baby and father are all doing very well".
Douglas, 55, said recently that he planned to be present at the birth so he could "hold her hand" during labour. Catherine was also joined by her mother, Pat, who was at her side for the birth of her first grandchild.
Dylan is Douglas’ second child after Cameron, from his marriage to Diandra Douglas.
The youngest Douglas isn’t the first child of a celebrity to be given the monicker. Other star parents who have used the name for their sons include Pamela Anderson and Pierce Brosnan.
Zeta Jones, 30, who was born in Swansea and found fame in TV series ‘The Darling Buds of May’, before going to Hollywood to star in blockbusters like ‘The Mask Of Zorro’ and ‘Entrapment’. She met Douglas at the Deauville Film Festival in 1998.
Michael Douglas took his first lead role, in ‘Hail, Hero’, the year Zeta-Jones was born, 1969, but the couple claim the age gap doesn’t bother them. However, like most stars in love, the couple have been hammering out a pre-nuptial agreement detailing how much of Douglas’ 150 million dollar fortune Catherine would walk off with, should they ever split.
Douglas has said he will take a leading role in Dylan’s upbringing to allow Catherine to concentrate on her career.
Dylan has already starred in his first film – Zeta-Jones was persuaded by director Stephen Soderberg (‘The Limey’, ‘Out of Sight’) to feature her pregnancy in ‘Traffic’, which also stars Michael Douglas.
Michael Douglas is one of Hollywood’s biggest stars, appearing in smash hits like FATAL ATTRACTION, ROMANCING THE NILE, THE GAME and WALL STREET. He is also a renowned producer.
