"It’s true that Trump with his… he appears to be resuscitated and he’s untouchable but there’s an argument to be made by Harris. First, Biden’s good (economic) results and maybe she’s smart enough to come up with a pitch that strikes a chords with Americans."

10. SOUNDBITE (French) Catherine (last name withheld), 55, visitor from Burgundy:
"I think it’s a good thing because he didn’t seem to be in good shape enough to take this on. It’s better that he is replaced by someone who is good and is able to counter Trump. That would be good because Trump doesn’t seem to like France very much and that worries me. It’s one thing to have our President give us a hard time but if on top of that we’re not liked abroad, that’s not good."

STORYLINE:
People in France reacted on Monday to the announcement by U.S. President Joe Biden that he was dropping out of the race for the White House, with many welcoming his decision.

Biden dropped out of the 2024 race on Sunday, ending his bid for reelection after a disastrous debate with Donald Trump that raised doubts about the incumbent’s fitness for office.

On the streets of Paris, architecture student, Chloé Haudry, described Biden’s decision as a "good thing".

"I do like Joe Biden but I think he’s a bit too old now to be facing Donald Trump, and I think Kamala Harris has more chance to win the election, so that’s a really good thing from my point of view," she said.

Another local who gave only her first name, Catherine, echoed the sentiment.

"I think it’s a good thing because he didn’t seem to be in good shape enough to take this on," she said.

"It’s better that he is replaced by someone who is good and is able to counter Trump."

Biden’s decision to bow out came after escalating pressure from his Democratic allies to step aside following the June 27 debate, in which the 81-year-old president trailed off, often gave nonsensical answers and failed to call out the former president’s many falsehoods.

The president has thrown his support behind Vice President Kamala Harris, and other prominent Democrats moved quickly to rally around her candidacy, but it’s unclear just how smooth her path to the party’s nomination is.
