STORYLINE:
Brazil’s President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva attended the launch of Guilherme Boulos’ campaign for mayor of Sao Paulo on Saturday, betting on the socialist to curb the advance of the far right, represented by former president Jair Bolsonaro, in the country’s largest city.
“One thing I am certain of is that with Boulos’ victory, we will be able to say that the far right, the fascists, the Nazis, the denialists, the liars, and the fake news will never again govern this country or this city,” said Lula.
According to the president, political polarization in the country will be evident during Sao Paulo’s race between current mayor Ricardo Nunes, supported by Bolsonaro, and Boulos.
Boulos is currently a federal deputy from the Socialism and Liberty Party and has a background as a leader of the homeless workers’ movement.
He will be running for mayor for the second time, and his main goal is to reduce social inequalities.
The municipal elections take place on October 6 across the country.
