2. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Ashraf Khattab, from Deir al-Balah:
“Here you see the mosque. Since the beginning of the war people stopped praying in this mosque. When it was bombed, people had not prayed in it for two months, not daily prayers or Friday prayers. Now we suffer when we go for Friday prayers.”
3. Various of destroyed mosque
4. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Ashraf Khattab, from Deir al-Balah:
“The feeling is outrageous. It feels as if a part of your body was removed. During (the Muslim holy month of) Ramadan we could not perform Taraweeh prayers, and also during the feast there were no mosques and today is the same for daily prayers and Friday prayers. There were no mosques left.”
5. Various of destroyed mosque, people on street
6. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Fathi Abu Dawraj, displaced from Khan Younis:
“For us in the eastern area (of Khan Younis) there are no mosques left. There is not even one mosque in the eastern area. People pray in their homes. We perform all the prayers in our homes. There aren’t even special prayer halls. There are small halls that can fit 20 or 15 people that are not enough for prayers. All the mosques in the eastern area were bombed.”
7. Various of destroyed Minaret of mosque
8. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Fathi Abu Dawraj, displaced from Khan Younis:
“Our wish now is to find clothes. Every day I dig with my hands through the rubble (of my house) to find some clothes that we cannot find in the market. For two days I have been digging to find a shoe. There is nothing. There are no shoes, no clothes, even a bar of soap sells for 30 shekels. We shower with soap, two days ago I showered with Pril (dishwashing soap).”
9. Various of closed mosque
10. Various of displaced man reading Quran outside tent
11. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Youssef Bakroun, displaced from Shejaiya neighborhood in Gaza City
“The biggest problem is water. There is no water so that a person washes before prayers and there is also no clothes to wear and look good. In the past we used to wake up early on Friday then shower and put on a white gown and perfumes. Today there are no mosques at all. You will have to walk for an hour and a half or one hour to reach a tent where prayers are held, in a tent.”
12. Various of containers filled with water
13. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Ismail al-Ghoul, displaced from Bureij:
“Most of the mosques were bombed. When people want to go for prayers, they have to wash before. People today cannot wash as there is no water and there is nothing that points to our rituals that we used to perform. There are some mosques where there are calls for prayers and there is nothing inside and they are empty."
14. Various of mud and water near tents of displaced people
STORYLINE:
A severe water crisis and the destruction of many mosques in the Gaza Strip during the Israel-Hamas war is making it difficult for residents to perform Islamic prayers.
Gaza residents now complain that they cannot find water to shower and wash before the prayers and since many mosques were destroyed, they have to walk long distances in order to find a prayers hall that are now mostly made up of tents.
People mainly struggle on Fridays where in the past observant Muslims used to wake up early in the morning and shower, then get dressed and walk to a nearby mosque to perform the prayers.
Since the Israel-Hamas war began in October, scores of mosques were destroyed in the Gaza Strip, mostly by Israeli airstrikes.
