“For over three decades of Taiwan’s democratization, we have been facing China’s threats alone. No matter whether they were verbal, military or the current mixed threats, we never took the chance of relying on anyone else. When it comes to military expenses, they represent a big part of national budgets and they keep on increasing. Since the past, we bought (military equipment) from the U.S.”

“In the past eight years, Taiwan has been interacting well with two U.S. presidents from both parties (Republican and Democrat). During President Tsai’s (Ing-wen) first term, she interacted with President (Donald) Trump. Her second term was with President (Joe) Biden. So (Taiwan’s government) is experienced. So, this experience will help (Taiwan) no matter who is elected.”

10. SOUNDBITE (Mandarin) Lin Chia-lung, Taiwan’s Foreign Minister:
“Of course, each (U.S.) president has his own style of leading. We will have to find the best way to work together. I think that the U.S. supporting Taiwan is not just about Taiwan. It is because this is in their interests. So, our diplomacy aims to find the best cooperation for Taiwan-U.S. relations.”

STORYLINE:
Taiwan’s new foreign minister said the island’s government will find ways to work with the United States, regardless of who is elected president in November.

Speaking in Taipei on Friday, Lin Chia-lung said Taiwan’s government has experience of working with leaders of both Republican and Democrat administrations.

“Of course, each president has his own style of leading. We will have to find the best way to work together," he told reporters at a press briefing.

He also responded to Donald Trump’s comments that Taiwan should pay the U.S. for its protection of the island, arguing that supporting Taiwan is in the interests of the U.S.

He reassured the two presidential candidates on future cooperation.
