STORYLINE:
China on Friday said it has protested to Japan over its first joint drills with the Taiwanese coast guard off its eastern coast.
The training is seen as an effort to expand maritime cooperation amid concern about China’s increasingly assertive activity in regional seas.
At a daily news briefing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian expressed opposition to the move and asked Japan to honour its commitment to the “one China” principle.
The drill was held amid escalating tension between China and Taiwan. Beijing claims Taiwan as its own territory and has not ruled out using force to take it.
Lin also said China noted the deadly clashes in Bangladesh recently over the allocation of government jobs.
“It is an internal affair of Bangladesh. We believe that the Bangladeshi government can handle it properly and maintain national unity and stability,” Lin said, adding that Chinese diplomatic missions will strive for the safety of Chinese nationals and entities there.
The protests, which began weeks ago but escalated sharply on Monday, represent the biggest challenge to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina since she won a fourth consecutive term in a January election that was boycotted by the main opposition parties.
The latest clashes follow the bloodiest day of the protests to date, with local media reporting 22 people killed as protesting students attempted to impose a “complete shutdown” on the country.
