“It’s a moment of national celebration in Malaysia. King Sultan Ibrahim Iskandar ascended the throne on January 31 and will be officially crowned on Saturday. His coronation at the National Palace will formalize his role as Malaysia’s 17th king in a ceremony steeped in Malay culture and pageantry. What’s unique is that a coronation takes place every five years as nine Malay state rulers take turns to be Malaysia’s king under the world’s only rotating monarchy system. More than 700 guests are expected to attend the coronation that will be followed by a royal banquet. Sultan Ibrahim from southern Johor state is one of the country’s richest men with an extensive business empire. He is known for having a large collection of luxury cars and motorbikes, and his own private army. Malaysia’s king plays a largely ceremonial role but the 65-year-old sultan is outspoken about Malaysian politics and corruption.”

STORYLINE:
Malaysia’s new king, who has been on the throne since January, will be crowned in a coronation ceremony on Saturday.

Associated Press journalist Eileen Ng explains Malaysia’s unique monarchy.

Sultan Ibrahim Iskandar, 65, took his oath of office at the palace and signed the instrument of the proclamation of office in a ceremony witnessed by other royal families, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and Cabinet members.

One of the richest men in the country, Sultan Ibrahim has an extensive business empire ranging from real estate to telecoms and power plants.

Nine ethnic Malay state rulers have taken turns as king for five-year terms under the world’s only such system since Malaysia gained independence from Britain in 1957. Malaysia has 13 states but only nine have royal families, some that trace their roots to centuries-old Malay kingdoms that were independent states until they were brought together by the British.
