STORYLINE:
A water crisis in the Gaza Strip is affecting many people in the coastal region amid the scorching summer heat.
Dozens of men and children stood in line in Jabaliya camp, north of the enclave, to fill their containers with water that was being distributed in a tanker truck.
The territory’s ability to deliver clean water has been virtually decimated by nine brutal months of war between Israel and Hamas. This has made grim living conditions worse and raised health risks for hundreds of thousands of people deprived of adequate shelter, food and medicine, aid groups say.
Temperatures keep rising in the Gaza Strip while displaced Palestinians in Jabaliya camp continue to struggle with water scarcity.
The war in Gaza, which was sparked by Hamas’ October 7 attack on southern Israel, has killed more than 38,600 people, according to the territory’s Health Ministry, which does not distinguish between combatants and civilians in its count.
The war has created a humanitarian catastrophe in the coastal Palestinian territory, displaced most of its 2.3 million population and triggered widespread hunger.
Hamas’ October attack killed 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and militants took about 250 hostage. About 120 remain in captivity, with about a third of them believed to be dead, according to Israeli authorities.
