1. Wide of United States Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy
2. SOUNDBITE (English) Vivek Murthy, United States Surgeon General:
"I was horrified (after the attempted assassination of Donald Trump). This is the United States of America. We should not be experiencing those kind of terrible events. And thank God that former President Trump survived and that he’s okay. I think also about the people who were in the audience at that time who were at the rally and about the fear that they may have been experiencing as they worried about their own lives and the lives of their family and friends around them. That kind of fear, by the way, is what millions of people experience every day in our country, in neighborhoods where gun violence has become all too common."

4. SOUNDBITE (English) Vivek Murthy, United States Surgeon General:
"54% of Americans have experience either directly or through a family member, gun violence. Right. And that could be losing a family member to gun violence. It could be being shot yourself, and surviving being threatened with a firearm. People think that the costs of gun violence are the lives that we lose. And we lose nearly 50,000 lives every year to gun violence, the highest price we pay. But there are other costs, too. The reverberating impacts of gun violence have taken a toll on the mental health and well-being of Americans. They’ve led people to worry about their safety around common, everyday activities. 60% of Americans are worried now about losing a loved one to gun violence. More than half of our kids are worried about a shooting taking place in their school."

6. SOUNDBITE (English) Vivek Murthy, United States Surgeon General:
"I think if we recognize the toll that gun violence is taking in communities everywhere, on kids everywhere, my hope is that we can shift from looking at it as a polarizing and political issue, and see it for what it is, which is a public health issue that affects all of us from, you know, people in small communities, you know, in America to people, you know, who are running for high office in our land. It is affecting everyone. And that should be a wake-up call to our nation."
7. Wide interview
STORYLINE:
Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy told the Associated Press he was “horrified” to learn that former President Donald Trump was injured in a shooting on Saturday.
“Thank God that former President Trump survived and is OK,” Murthy said in an exclusive interview with the AP.
A 20-year-old man’s assassination attempt on Trump using an AR-style rifle happened just weeks after Murthy declared gun violence a public health crisis in America. Murthy called on lawmakers to consider more restrictions around the weapons like the one the gunman used.
His proposals have been roundly rejected by Republicans. Trump fired Murthy, who was an Obama appointee, from the Surgeon General post in 2017. He is serving a second term with the Biden administration.
Murthy said he was also thinking of Trump rallygoers on Saturday, who feared for their lives.
One person in the crowd at the Trump rally was killed and two others seriously wounded.
“That kind of fear, by the way, is what millions of people experience every day in our country,” Murthy said of gun violence across the U.S.
