STORYLINE:
Thousands of people marched in Karachi in scorching heat on Wednesday to commemorate the 7th-century death of Imam Hussein, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad.

Some of the participants rhythmically beat their chests in a show of grief, while others expressed their fervor in the ritual of self-flagellation.

The rift between Islam’s two main sects deepened after Sunnis killed Imam Hussein in battle in the Iraqi city of Karbala, south of Baghdad.

It continues to this day to play a key role in shaping the identity of Shiites, who represent over 10% of the world’s 1.8 billion Muslims.

In the Shiite community, Ashoura is viewed as a symbol of struggle against injustice and tyranny.

A group of mourners in Karachi carried Palestinian flags to express their support for people in the Gaza Strip as the Israel-Hamas war entered its 10th month.

"Today, Muslims in Palestine are being oppressed," said Syed Ali Afzal Rizvi, a Shiite Muslim scholar.

There was a heavy police presence to guard the procession, which has been the target of attacks in the past years.

Authorities also suspended mobile phone and internet services as a security measure.
