1. Animation that tells the story of Green House workers in the US and their experiences with the heat.
STORYLINE:
From vertical farming startups to traditional specialty crop growers, many farms are marketing greenhouses.

They promise temperature-controlled fresh produce closer to consumers which is protected from drought, flooding, storms and other climate extremes.

But that promise overlooks the experience of workers inside.

There are no federal protections in the U.S. requiring greenhouses to measure temperatures and humidity, but a worker in California said she experienced temperatures as high as 115 degrees – leading to nausea, headaches and excessive sweating.
Vertical farm workers at AppHarvest in Kentucky, which declared bankruptcy, said high temperatures meant colleagues were carried out on makeshift stretchers.
A nursery worker in Florida recalls her T-shirts getting soaked and losing weight from the excessive indoor heat.
Emily Hernandez recalled the stress of working 40-hour weeks in the heat as she was pressured to swiftly weed and re-pot “hundreds upon hundreds” of succulents.

Some workers also said they had little to no breaks, and barely any training.
Safety and comfort tips instead came from colleagues such as bring a fan and a chair. Keep one water bottle in the freezer and one with you always.

Since they can be climate controlled, researchers and advocates say if there’s proper training and greenhouses maintain adequate temperatures and humidity levels, they can ensure that workers are kept safe and comfortable.
