STORYLINE:
Shiite Muslims in Iraq commemorated Ashoura on Wednesday, marking the 7th-century death of Prophet Muhammad’s grandson, Hussein, that gave birth to their faith.

In the Shiite community, Ashoura is viewed as a symbol of struggle against injustice and tyranny.

Participants usually wear black and set up black funeral tents, a sign of mourning, while carrying red flags that represent Hussein’s blood.

Thousands of Shiite Muslims, many of them wearing black and holding flags aloft, gathered at the shrine of Imam Hussein in the city of Karbala.

Elsewhere, participants marched through the streets of Baghdad slashing their heads with blades, causing blood to run streak down their white robes.
