2. SOUNDBITE (Spanish) Dr. Ivette Mendoza, President of the Peruvian Medical Federation:
"We have been fighting for many years with protests and strikes for the budget to be increased. This affects all Peru. Here in Lima we have no medicines, supplies, equipment, reagents, infrastructure. In the provinces it’s even worse. There’s no leadership at the (health) ministry. What we are asking is for the minister to do his job and comply with basic standards. At the same time, routine promotions that should be given to all workers every five years, are not happening. That hurts everyone financially and affects the quality of care. It creates a bad working environment. These are fair and legal rights.
3. Various of health sector workers marching outside ministry
STORYLINE:
Dozens of Peruvian doctors and health workers started a 48-hour strike on Wednesday by marching in front of the health ministry to demand better working conditions.
The protesters, some marching in white medical coats, called for better funding for the nation’s public hospitals and better pay for personnel.
A line of police officers in riot gear tried to stop them from demonstrating outside the ministry, leading to some tussles between the two sides.
Protesters said that if their demands are not met, they will opt for an indefinite strike, which will disproportionately affect the country’s poorer citizens.
Dr. Ivette Mendoza, President of the Peruvian Medical Federation, said hospitals in Lima are facing shortages of medicine, supplies and equipment, among other things, while provincial hospitals are even harder hit.
"We have been fighting for many years with protests and strikes for the budget to be increased," she said.
"What we are asking is for the minister to do his job and comply with basic standards."
